Just returned from shopping at K-Mart

First time back to Big K in a couple of weeks.

    - The store looked cleaner than I have ever seen it before - obviously a lot of extra attention is being paid to appearance. Still has a long way to go, but a step in the right direction. Starting to see a few bare spaces in the grocery department.

    - There were more cars in the parking lot than on a normal Tuesday afternoon (maybe customers were expecting a fire sale today).

    - I found (almost) everything I went in for. No waiting or hassles at the checkout. The employees appeared a bit concerned but upbeat.

Overall a positive experience - much better than expected.

      Thats why KM went BK.

    • So you're saying this bankruptcy thing is really a Kmart 'value added extra'?

WOW! What a strategy! The new grand poobah is a genius.

    • For those of you who use to shop at your favorite K Mart store and are now looking for an alternative please give your local Costco warehouse a look. Please note the lower prices (lower than Sam's Club). Please note the samples (unlike K Mart) and great customer service. Also at 70 cents i might buy a few shares of K Mart.

    • I found the same thing last night. Shelves are mostly fully packed and plenty of helpful employees. I even asked if they were hiring, they said yes with starting pay at $8/hr (which is not bad for entry level retail in my area).

I don't get why people love WallMart so much. The clothes suck and the bargains are not that compelling, I think K Mart is highly price competitive. Ever try getting assistance in a WallMart? The floor coverage is awful!

The only advantage is see is the store layout, Kmart is pretty weak in that area.

      • This is what they may have needed, the fear of unemployment. I had one real bad experience there involving my credit card. The magnetic strip on mine didn't work and so they had to put a reciept over the card and rub it with a knife. The manager came over and asked me why there were scratches on it. Otherwise, it's been good. I'm going to the Bridgeview one tonight for a few things and see how they are shaping up.

      • Clothes at Wal Mart do suck. K Mart's clothes in young guys stuff (15 to even 40 years) is damn good.

I buy casual clothes at three places - Old Navy, Target and K Mart. K Mart's stuff is comparabale or better than the other two. KM's long sleeve casual dress shirts are better than the Cherokee stuff at Target. Old Navy's stuff has gone down hill.

I skip Marshalls, TJ Max and Ross because they only have the real crap in stock or the expensive stuff. For dressier stuff I like Stein Mart. I worked as a buyer out of college at a high-end dept store so I know about clthes, pricing, etc.

I hope KM makes it. I like their casual clothes. Sheets & towels are competitive with Target.

      • Millions will be saved by closing the dead weight stores! Don't be surprised if you don't see some real improvements within months in more ways than one. Americans love the under-dog.

    • Fleming Cos. , the only grocery distributor to KM, halted shipments when a payment for $78 million was missed last week.

Now that bankruptcy has been declared, it is likely KM can pay Fleming, and the shipments of groceries will resume.

Perishables were not halted, only non-perishables. Fleming trades on NYSE: FLM.
