"Wholesale Electricity Prices in the Northwest Could More Than Triple"
    Christian Science Monitor (04/11/01) P. 1
A federal energy official said the drought in the Northwest has left the
region's hydroelectric plants with so little water that wholesale
electricity prices could triple if the aluminum industry continues to
require power to run its smelters. The Bonneville Power Administration,
which supplies about 50 percent of the region's wholesale electricity with
29 hydroelectric dams on the Colombia and Snake Rivers, would have to pay
sky-high prices to buy power on the spot market if the industry decides to
keep the smelters running. According to the energy official, approximately
half of the extra power demand required by the smelters could be saved if
they were shut down for two years. (
