Back when gasoline prices had just jumped into the $3/gallon mode, Exxon was attacked by the govt.

Fast forward to today and Exxon is trading some 100% higher, still making a ton of money and paying a hefty dividend. Moral of the story, people hem and haw but eventually pay for what they need.

    • Competition in the market will ultimately determine the price of HVC drugs. The number 1 rule of capitalism is make as much money as you can, while you can. Gilead was right to start with a high price. They would still be getting the same complaints and condemnations if they priced the drug at $42,000 vice $84,000. The management of Insurance companies would be doing the same thing as Gilead if they were able to.

    • The only reason everyone in government and the insurance industry has their hackles up is because they love to take in money but hate to pay it out! (They want the money for themselves ... not to use for the people.)

Having said that, GILD has every right to charge $84K for a HEP C treatment ... more so considering it actually works! (For every success, there are so many failures in bio tech ... The cost of getting a drug through FDA approval is mind bogglingly expensive ... they have a right to as much money as they can charge / make.)

GILD is a for profit corporation ... not a charity ... nor a non profit ... Take away their incentive to get rich ... and you will take away their effort to outperform their peers in the pursuit of helping sick people.

The best and brightest aren't in it for the pleasure of knowing they did a good deed ...

Unless you are some liberal wacko like Buffet or Gates who are wildly well off and think everyone else should follow their example and give their fortunes away.
