Taiwan TV OEMs look to secure orders from Korea TV vendors Julian Ho, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Friday 17 August 2012] Taiwan-based TV OEMs are looking to secure more orders from South Korea-based TV vendors as Japan-based ones are cutting production and continuing to lay off workers, according to industry sources.
Japan-based TV vendors such as Sony, Toshiba, Sharp and Panasonic are all taking measures to decrease the continuing losses they have incurred over the last two years due to declines in domestic shipments, the Japanese Yen as well as natural disasters that hit the country.
These actions taken by the vendors mean a decrease in orders for Taiwan-based OEMs, said the sources. Despite the OEMs having better relations with Japan-based companies, they are now looking to securing orders from major Korea-based vendors such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which have the most potential of maintaining profits in the TV sector, added the sources.
Sources also said Korea-based vendors expect 2012 TV shipments to be roughly 3-4 times higher than Japan-based ones despite decreasing TV shipments for 2012. However, related supply chains are optimistic about economic recovery in North America during 2013, where TV sales are expected to increase and bring in increased profits for leading TV vendor Samsung, added the sources.
