Here is yet another article about a municipal water/sewer system crumbling apart and getting worse. The story mentions that one of the South Florida utilities has its own acoustical leak detection system that lowers equipment underground to listen for leaks. I wonder if Mueller's leak business could do it cheaper since they attach their listening equipment to hydrants above ground, I think.
Another nugget form the article, "Miami-Dade’s Water and Sewer Department’s had requested an 18 percent increase the previous year, with infrastructure improvements its top priority. Instead, county commissioners approved a pair of 6 percent increases." The utility didn't get all it wanted, but spending did go up 12% last year and it will probably go up again this year.
I know these articles come out several times every year and nothing happens with MWA, but every year water rates increase, providing more funds for repair and replacement. Add to that, recent stories of an increase in multi-family housing construction, to meet rental demand, and the bottoming out and turning of new single-family housing sales and things just might be looking up.
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and the best of luck!
