Anyone else heard or read about Attny. Gen. Eric Holder's proposal to change the way "druggies" are dealt with. From what I gathered, he is proposing to treat drug criminal's addiction, rather than imprisoning them, at least the "less dangerous" ones. If that's the government's plan, then this could be REAL, REAL big for Alkermes. I'm not sure if this is a result of Alkermes trials of VIVITROL with various prison systems, or if the government actually thought of something indpendently. (that would be a first!!) I understand that the government is looking at this as a more cost effective way to handle convicted drug criminals. Exactly what ALKS has been using as one of it's justifications, to treat rather than incarcerate.
I don't think we need to be putting in prison small time drug users. But Holder can jump up and down and circle jerk (his usual pastime) all he wants. Most drug laws are at the state level. Holder is largely irrelevant.
I agree with the irrelevant part, but his policy target as I understand it is the Federal Prison System that houses at least 216,000 convicted drug users. Not sure if any success would rub off on local prison systems, or if success at the local level is rubbing off on the federal system.
