Putnam Bank shuts down debit cardsPutnam, Conn. —Some Putnam Bank debit card customers will have to find another way to pay for necessities.Bank officials said Wednesday an increase in electronic fraud prompted the company to shut off the debit cards of at-risk customers, according to a message on the company’s Web site this week. The alert, sent by Chairman and Chief Operating Officer Thomas Borner, stated new cards were ordered for affected customers, with some already delivered. The message did not mention how many customers will be affected by the card cancellations, but said several individuals were sent letters in February after their cards appeared on a VISA Fraud Report. The company said the fraud is related to the Heartland Payment Processor security breach earlier this year, which is thought to have affected millions of credit and debit card transactions.“We attempted to contact these customers,” Borner wrote. “Unfortunately due to the magnitude of the situation, we were not able to personally call each of you and for that we apologize.”<http://www.norwichbulletin.com/news/x702313886/Putnam-Bank-shuts-down-debit-cards>
