P-man, I don't know the rules on wash sales for Institutions...30 days (if I recall correctly) for individuals. I DO KNOW that it is not uncommon for Institutions (especially Mutual Funds) to "window dress" their quarterly performance by disposing of some of their better gainers. Conversely, many institutions like to show "winners" in their portfolios at quarter's end. I'm guessing that we've seen far more window dressing than portfolio puffing :-) We'll see how this sorts out next week, but I'm of the view that you'll see moves up on at least three fronts:
1. As specified above.
2. In anticipation of earnings.
3. In anticipation of dividend.
All pretty meaningless in the long term as fundamentals will overtake the will of the liars and shorts and bears (oh my)...There's that sophomoric sense of humor again :-)
