Working at SAP NetWeaver is US?

"Netweaver is getting a whole lot of traction in the SAP customer base. "

. . . this bothers me. Has the technology ever been sold outside the install base? In fact, has any company (install base or not) ever purchased NetWeaver alone, not in the prepackaged bundle with the apps?

If not, then what is the value of a product that cannot be sold? How much money are they going to spend developing a product that cannot be sold on its own?

    This is a problem.

    • There are multiple companies who have purchased Netweaver standalone (without having any SAP apps at all). Visa is the best example, they're actually an Oracle shop. However, SAP's strategy is to bundle it with apps, therefore their platform's affinity to SAP apps, not a pure play infrastructure. They don't want to encourage pure sales of the platform, its an added value to the apps. Its working extremely well, BTW. over 30,000 components of NW installed today, over 6000 customers live on multiple components. System integrators can't staff up projects quickly enough.

    • To be fair bits of Netweaver have been sold on their own but very rarely. Example BW. So you are, IMO, wrong in fact but right to worry!
