Doesn't anyone comprehend that the Pashtuns have virtually wiped out the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan? Anybody recall the late campaign in 2001 to drive the Taliban from power in Afghanistan after 9/11?
The Northern Alliance were paid good money by the CIA to help clear those regions inhabited by minority tribes.
But when Usama bin Laden reached Pashtun country in eastern Afghanistan, the Pashtuns who were the Taliban, after all, were not going to go after bin Laden the heroic mujahadeen fighter who helped drive the Ruskies out of Afghanistan and after whom many of their children were named!
When the USAF started to bomb Al-Quaida out of Tora-Bora, the CIA asked for a battalion of USA Rangers to provide blocking action to snatch bin Laden as he left Tora Bora for Pakistan. Instead, Georgie Porgie called an eight (8) day halt in operations and negotiated for the Pakistani (Taliban) Pashtuns to provide the block. HO Ho ho. Usama slipped right into Pakistan and it took a decade to find and bring justice to him.
Georgie Porgie was surely the right man for the POTUS job, wasn't he! All IMHO.
ACE: The ACE is in place.
Taliban had shut down the opium farms--cut opium production by 95%. In the year after the US invasion, opium production was up to normal levels, and the next year it was up to record levels.
I've seen claims that global traffic in illegal drugs is woth $500 billion a year, and that the international banks could not function without the liquidity (cash) they take in from this trade.
Afghanistan has $1 trillion in undeveloped mineral resources, including a lot of Lithium, a resource of much current interest. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/14/world/asia/14minerals.html?pagewanted=all
The timing of this announcement back in 2010, when a lot of people were questioning the wisdom of continuing the Afghan adventure, struck many of us as suspicious. The claim that the resources had just been "discovered" was also suspect. The Soviets mapped them a long time ago.
> Usama slipped right into Pakistan and it took a decade to find and bring justice to him.
But there's more. Osama took 1600 al Qaeda fighters with him when he went. There were two trails out, and only one of them was bombed. The trail crossed a highway, so US troops could have driven up there and had hot showers and movies and everything while they guarded the trail, but they didn't. There were only 36 US soldiers on the job. Afghan warlords known by the CIA to be unreliable were hired for the work.
The Christian Science Monitor said that in a hotel lobby in Jalalabad their reporter saw representatives of the Afghan warlords that we'd hired to catch bin Laden--they were selling letters of safe passage to al Qaeda agents.
And then there were 4000 Taleban and al Qaeda fighters who flew out of Kunduz airport to Pakistan with no interference from the USAF. "All the Federales say they could have caught him any day; they always let him get away out of kindness, I suppose."
A Delta Force guy, pen name "Dalton Fury", wrote that he proposed that the trail to Pakistan be mined, and he proposed that his Delta Force crew attack Tora Bora from an unexpected side after a challenging hike. Both plans were overruled by the top brass.
At one point our Afghan "allies" actually held our troops at gunpoint while al Qaeda moved by.
A British force reports that they were just 20 minutes behind bin Laden on the trail. They withdrew to give the Americans the honor of catching him, and the Americans did nothing.
Col David Hunt reports that in 2007 bin Laden was allowed to get away again. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,304306,00.html
I used to be able to provide mainstream news references to support all of those claims. I'll dig them up if anyone's interested, to the extent that they still exist.
"Why are we still occupying Afghanistan?" - ask obunko, he said he was going to bring the troops home when he first campaigned, then he supported the surge which he at first voted against....
What S do you think he has to say if he says anything?
"Vote fo' me; oh, please vote fo' me."
That is the message since his inaugural; a non-stop re-election campaign.
Methinks that Michelle likes having an address "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue." And like any good husband, Hussein wants to keep his wife happy. As I have learned over six (6) decades, "Happy WIFE, HAPPY LIFE." They say the reverse is too true, too. All IMHO.
