UPDATE: Samsung Elec: No Longer Pursuing SanDisk PurchaseLast update: 9/3/2009 3:35:40 AM(Adds background) SEOUL (Dow Jones)--South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE) said Thursday that it is no longer pursuing a plan to purchase SanDisk Corp. (SNDK). The announcement comes after the two companies signed a patent-licensing deal in May that heads off the threat of litigation between them in the flash memory market. The South Korean company made an unsolicited bid to acquire the U.S. flash memory card maker for $5.85 billion in 2008. At the time, SanDisk rejected the offer, noting that the price was too low. Samsung subsequently withdrew its bid on Oct. 22, 2008 and no progress has been made since then, the company said in a regulatory filing. The pact signed in May extended an existing licensing pact between the companies and provides Samsung with rights to key SanDisk patents on what could be an important advance in flash-chip technology. Financial details of the pact weren't disclosed. But the companies said fixed payments and royalty rates are expected to be about half those of recent years under an agreement which expired on Aug. 14. -By Jin-Young Yook, Dow Jones Newswires; 822-2198-2230; jin-young.yook@dowjones.com (END) Dow Jones NewswiresSeptember 03, 2009 03:35 ET (07:35 GMT)
