Intel, Apple: Citi Sees Foundry Relationship Forming

Any announcements confirming this would be THE catalyst for a decisive turnaround and climb for Intel - setting the stage for multi-year growth.

“We suspect one such condition [for Intel to accept foundry work] includes the potential for Apple to eventually convert from an ARM-based core for handsets and tablets to x86.” Yeung things Intel’s “Tri-Gate” breakthrough in chip manufacturing, announced in mid-May, is “the main attraction for Apple.”

He expects Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) to get some portion of Apple’s foundry business, in place of Samsung, but he thinks the transition to 28 nanometer feature sizes for Apple’s chips will prove so challenging that Apple will be compelled to seek Intel’s help.

In fact, it’s possible the reason Intel plans not to move its “Atom” mobile chips into a 22-nanometer process before 2013, ”could be in relationship to a potential foundry partnership with Apple (much like Samsung’s delay of their Hummingbird solution),” writes Yeung.
