This happened after the Nokia debacle. Anand was excessively focused on this mega deal with Nokia on coming out with Meego-based phones - which was a strategic error. When Nokia decided to drop it and go with Windows Phone, Intel was left in the lurch. It was a pretty bad black eye for Intel...leaving Paul Otellini no option but to let Anand go.Lesson learned, Intel has been working with multiple players on its phone platform since then - and announced Lava, Lenovo, Motorola, Orange, ZTE, etc.
