Intel Announces Intel® SSD DC S3700 Series -- Next-Generation Data Center Solid-State Drive

A couple interesting part of this announcement involve the large drive size, the consistent access latency, and most of all, the improvement in WRITE time.

The consistent access time means that Intel has worked around the problems with the wear algorithms. SSD's map the blocks so they are equally accessed and a block does not wear out. Early algorithms and many in play today will stop the writing if they are shuffling data around. This is terrible for enterprise apps that depend on response times. Disk accesses pile up behind this shuffling and choke the system.

WIth a 15x improvement in write times, these non-volatile memories are getting close to providing a large, non-volatile, random access memory for low power systems. If a system (smartphone or tablet or Ultrabook) has a large non-volatile memory, then applcations don't have to be written to disk before going to sleep.

    Talk about fast startup time.
