In the meantime, Atom chip (z2580 beginning of 2013) will easily handle the competition in smartphones...but Haswell is the platform INTC is betting on for the future and will replace all variations of INTC chips for consumer devices.
With all the negative news out there about INTC, everything seems gloomy. But research a little and you come to realize that INTC is truly reacting to market changes. Haswell is INTC's answer to tablets. INTC will take a good chunk of tablet market when Haswell debuts in thin sexy PC convertibles running windows 8 UI with touch capabilities. Atom z2580 will be INTC's answer to smartphone market. The last year INTC has been perfecting performance and interoperability of Android on x86 platform. A z2580 phone will come out and will be thin, sexy and consume less power than other phones while being the most powerful. By 2014, INTC will have a major manufacturing advantage when they switch to 14nm and then Haswell (desktop core more powerful than core i7) will be in phones. That is the roadmap you should keep in mind of.
