Intel Atom S1200 is Industry's First 6-Watt Processor for Servers

Atom: It's not just for netbooks anymore.
Intel's Atom family gained notoriety as the architecture of choice for netbooks and nettops, but the future is so much brighter than that. There's of course the mobile handset and tablet categories, and as of today, you can add servers to Atom's resume. Intel's new Atom-based S1200 product family is the world's first low-power, 64-bit server-class system-on-chip (SoC) for high-density microservers, the Santa Clara chip maker announced today.

"The data center continues to evolve into unique segments and Intel continues to be a leader in these transitions," said Diane Bryant, vice president and general manager of the Datacenter and Connected Systems Group at Intel. "We recognized several years ago the need for a new breed of high-density, energy-efficient servers and other datacenter equipment. Today, we are delivering the industry’s only 6-watt1 SoC that has key datacenter features, continuing our commitment to help lead these segments."

Intel's Atom S1200 chip is a dual-core part with Hyper Threading support. It has a memory controller that supports up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, Intel Virtualization Technologies (Intel VT), eight PCI Express 2.0 lanes, ECC support, and various other I/O interfaces integrated from Intel chipsets.

Intel's kicking things off with three processors ranging from 1.6GHz to 2.0GHz. They're available today starting at $54 (in 1,000 unit trays).
