Digitimes has claimed that Intel's process of shrinking its manufacturing process to 14nm is right on schedule and that the new hardware is still expected to be with us some time within the next 12 months or so. The obvious benefits of this will be more powerful chips, lower power consumption and more, but 12 months is a long time to wait in this industry and we'll have to wait and see what offerings Intel has lined up for us.
On to of that its now belived that Intel will have got the process down to 5nm by 2015!
Intel are making great advances at the moment, something the developers at Samsung and TSMC will be well aware of as they face being left behind the pack, especially since they plan to ship 18" wafers some time in 2017.
Intel is already looking to expand its plants in Oregon, Arizona and Ireland which will no doubt help them push out further 14nm CPUs and Socs throughout 2013 before we hit the 10nm, 7nm and 5nm process in the run up to 2015-17.
People don't seem to realize the importance of this fact. Essentially this means that you can invest in Intel for the foreseeable future and know that you're going to be at the top of the fabrication game throughout. Intel invented the microprocessor and for the last 40 odd years has tirelessly pushed the Moore's Law envelope. This article basically says that it will continue to do that for the next 10 years at least.
Never thought of that, but it makes sense.
Compared to Intel which will be in all computing products with the latest and greatest capabilities, ARM could be in products that are more like toys for very cheap dollars.
Will Intel allow ARM to stay in the mobile computing game?
That all depends on wether Intel support ARM architecture in some way.
I think that is a possibility but over time Intel will phase them out after their top customers decide that it makes more sense to stay with all x86 architecture for seamless computing across all form factors.
