The Countdown Has Begun: 168 Days Left

TSMC has until June 30 to produce volume production on 20nm planar or will suffer the rather dramatic competitive consequences. Picture Apple waving buh-bye.

I wonder if anyone thinks they will make it...

    Sentiment: Strong Buy

No new news. This from a while back:

TSMC to make Apple processors this quarter

TSMC will start producing chips for Apple this quarter, reports Commercial Times, the Taiwan newspaper.

This quarter's production will be of 'experimental' ICs, says the newspaper.

It is thought that the experimental production will be to see if TSMC's gate-last 28nm process offers advantages over Samsung's gate-first 32nm process which Apple currently uses.

It will also allow Apple to make comparisons with Samsung's gate-first 28nm process.

At 20nm it is thought that everyone will go back to gate-last.

After making those comparisons on process capabilities, Apple will have to consider what guarantees it can get on production volumes.

If TSMC does get the volume production contract, it will be making Apple's A6 application processors.

    • They are attempting it (A6X) on 28nm HKMG planar so it is less of a stretch but still has to be proven. Remember Apple is currently on 32nm so 28nm will be an improvement for them especially as TSMC has 3 different flavors of HKMG to choose from (HP, HPM, HPL).

Meanwhile TSMC 20nm is looking late and apparently won't be ready for Nvidia in early 2014 ...
