Imprint lithography firm Molecular Imprints Inc. said Thursday (Jan. 17) that one of its machines is being used by an unnamed semiconductor company to support the development of chip production on 450-mm diameter wafers. The company claimed that the availability of the machine would shorten the semiconductor industry's transition to 450-mm wafers by at least two years.
Remember the "surprise" $2 billion capex SPECIFICALLY for 450mm - a good analyst would have followed up asking what portion of $2 billion is equipment. Non asked for a breakdown of $2 billion.
The amount is just right for building/equiping a pilot line - I think Intel is pulling in the schedule for 450mm wafers.
Everybody KLAC, LRCX, NVLS, AMAT is onboard - ASML was reluctant but Intel "addressed" ASML concerns
EUV / double patterning is only applied to the critical layers - so Molecular Imprints might be on something
You nailed it. A "good analyst" might have asked what Intel expected to accomplish with that investment and how it would improve their competition position. If Intel had said we believe this investment will give us a two year lead over everyone at 450mm that response would have shaken the industry. That none asked says a lot about the quality of the "analysts" usefulness.
