Although on a weekly basis, the three major indexes finished a volatile week on the upside, other more broad based indexes, such as the NYSE composite, the small cap Russell 2000, and the mid cap S&P 400 index, all finished lower. This indicated that the market advance was getting narrower with gains limited in a few large cap stocks. Without the small and mid cap stocks getting their upside momentum back, it will be difficult for the S&P 500 to break out to new highs. Expect the roller coaster ride to continue in the near term with stocks stuck in a narrow range. For the S&P 500, watch for resistance near 1525 with support at 1500, followed by its 50-day moving average near 1485.
