Who cares about a few jobs? The pipeline is for shipping Canadian tar sands oil to Louisiana to be refined on our overbooked refineries to ship it to China. The net effect will actually drive gasoline prices up in the US, and profit only the oligarchs (like Koch's) who are raping the world's resources, while furthering global climate change. I hope Obama and the dems grow some cajones and stand firm: No Negotiation on health care plan. No Negotiation of debt ceiling. No Negotiation on shut down. It's obvious that the republicans are terrorists who are slitting our collective throats. We don't negotiate with terrorists.
50 jobs sounded like something a clown would say.
Obama did say that the pipeline would create probably 50 to 100 PERMANENT jobs after construction was completed. He suggested a temporary creation of 2,000 jobs. The environmental report says 3,900.
The only site that I saw that was pushing the "50 jobs" story was Breitbart which used the same Tampa Bay Times and State Department numbers down in the Breitbart article. The "50" makes such an exciting headline number for those who want to run with it.
Tampa Bay Times POLITIFACT:
"As for jobs, the president went out of his way to downplay them. In the big picture, they were but a "blip", as the president put it.
"Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator. There is no evidence that that’s true," Obama said. "Any reporter who is looking at the facts would take the time to confirm that the most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline -- which might take a year or two -- and then after that we’re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 jobs in a economy of 150 million working people."
There’s been a running battle over jobs and the Keystone XL. We’ve checked claims that it would employ as many as 20,000 workers. We rated that False; even the company behind the pipeline backed away from that number."
