    (Advisory) Boots on the Ground

"American forces will not be returning to combat in Iraq." So said President Obama during a press conference in which he announced that up to 300 military advisors will be sent to Iraq to "train, advise and support" Iraqi forces. Obama also said that the U.S. military would take "targeted and precise" actions if necessary. Here's a full transcript of the remarks.

+ WaPo: U.S. seeking alternatives to Maliki.

+ MoJo: Here's what the battle over Iraqi oil means for America.

+ (Too) much of the recent coverage of the Iraq crisis has been dominated by an incredible WSJ op-ed by #$%$ Cheney and Liz Cheney in which they argue that we are "watching American defeat snatched from the jaws of victory" in Iraq. In tomorrow's WSJ, maybe #$%$ Cheney and George Custer will advise Obama on winning at Little Bighorn. I try to lean away from politics here, but in this case, even Fox News can't believe Cheney is giving advice.

    • It always begins with good intentions, but war zones are dangerous places and when advisers are killed or captured it spirals out of control. Once that happens the American taxpayer owns it - again.

    • Heard this before and don't believe a word of it. Started with JFK and Vietnam and has surfaced with multiple presidents since. Always end up with our troops being deployed and never allowed to do their job. As a result, we lose a lot of good men and leave without winning. If this clown sends troops, don't let congress hamstring them.

[You can't seriously be comparing Iraq with Vietnam. How exactly were troops constrained in Iraq? We overran the country, the capital and hung the leader.

We didn't create the current situation. Maliki did. We invested billions in training the Iraqi army. Enough is enough. The idea that we are constantly going to have a military presence all over the world is slap crazy.

We never should have been in Iraq in the first place. There weren't any weapons of mass destruction. The clowns are the people who lied to us and got us into a war in the first place.

Obama isn't going to send in troops because he is interested in getting us out of wars and not into them.

Those people who originally created this mess are the last ones we need to listen to now.]
