This happened to me on a flight to Fort Lauderdale. I spoke to the attendant who arranged to reboot the system. It interrupted everybody's television watching for a bit, but it made all the screens work. I am sorry that your attendants did not know how to do that.
If you feel that a $5. credit is not adequate, you can write to the airline by sending them an email on their website. I am certain they would rather cause you to feel that you had been treated fairly than to make you a non-customer for life.
