No #!@#$ they wouldn't make it! They need to completely build a whole new infrastructure for charging electric cars. This company is the start of whats to come in the future. Its about time America starts up a new American brand that is worth talking about! Elon Must is the Henry Ford of this Generation!
Neither would the US auto industry survive without the direct help of the US Treasury and indirectly by Federal Reserve Bank... i.e. Taxpayer. Chrysler nearly belly-up in 1979, if it was not for the Jimmy Carter led $3B loan at below market prices for the risk. In the 2007-9 recession, GM and Chrysler went belly-up big time. Government money bailed out GM and indirectly Chrysler. Ford benefited from dirt cheap interest rates, loans for hi efficiency cars in $Bs, much more than Tesla. They all benefited from cash for clunkers!
The US oil industry benefits from the $Trillions we spend on the US Armadas, wars of liberation, etc to maintain our hegemony over global oil supplies. Without that we would have oil embargoes... anybody remember in 1973-74 Arab Oil Embargo led by our friends in Saudi Arabia? The same country where most of the 9-11 bombers came from?
Half the population is dependent on the government. Most will get Social Security and Medicare payments well in excess of what was put in.
Then again we might be better off if the US Treasury had not stepped in. Let GM and Chrysler go banko, someone would pick up the pieces and get the factories restarted without all the legacy costs.
BP paid something like $4.5 billion in fines in addition to billions to clean up and to "victims" of the spill, some legit some not. BP has set aside $42 billion in provisions but the number could reach $90 billion. Now there are few if any remnants of the spill. Overall it was in fact a massive stimulus for the region.
GM couldn't make it without govt subsidies, Chrysler couldn't make it without Govt subsidies, Big oil makes record profits and gets billions in govt subsidies... Apparently the stock market can't make it without govt subsidies..
So what's your point????
