There are many battery chemistries under development. Tesla holds at least six patents on various metal air combinations. One of these promises 500 to 1000 miles range. The problem is that as the density increases durability (lifespan) decreases.
The GE battery is still under lab testing and a prototype isn't even expected until next year. It is possible that the density will be promising but it might have a lifespan that makes it impractical.
In any case it is way too soon to claim this is the next generation battery.. Believe me there are many other irons in this fire, and some are much farther along the way in development.
