The Volt looks like a mini station wagon. No competition for Tesla. GM should bring back the EV1. Their only shot problem is all the program data and cars have been wiped off of the Earth by big oil. Just too late. Tesla is garbing a foot hold now. They missed the boat and now Tesla has all the hype. Even those stories show how ahead of the game Tesla is.
Why is that a problem? Suits a lot of peoples' driving needs perfectly. Is this a religion or a group effort of trying to get more people off of oil. GM is getting more people to adopt to EV driving with the Volt than Tesla is. And, it is affordable for a much larger audience. And no range anxiety.
I do like the volt. Out of all the plugin hybrid cars, it is the one that makes more sense. The key reason I like it is because it is primarily electric and It doesn't look too bad, the only reason I did get one is because it is too small for my needs. So I'm waiting to get a used Tesla model S.
Sentiment: Strong Buy
I agree completely, but I have to admit if it was truely $25k new that would be hard to resist. I'm skepttical GM can offer that and make any $, but we shall see.
I'd really be interested if they ditched that T shape battery and pushed the EV range upwards of 75 miles
At that price the Volt is a compelling car for sure, but for me personally I'd rather not bother with the ICE and just have a 200 mile range pure EV. Plus I'm not a fan of how GM put the large T Shaped battery in the middle of the car giving it only 4 seater ability. Additionally it's no where near the cargo storage of a Model S with it's huge truck and frunk.
Don't get me wrong I like the Volt and accept some buyers want that ICE range extender. I'm just ready to ditch having to ever go to a gas station or change the oil. I'm ready to plug in at night and leave my house the next moring free to travel 200 miles that day.
Practically speaking, the idea of a range extended EV makes sense in that the infrastructure for ICE is already in place. However, I would call the serial hybrid a transition vehicle to pure EVs. One of the main advantages of a pure EV is its simplicity and reliability. Having a separate ICE with all it's extra fluids and moving parts takes up space and costs more to maintain.
