On the SSYS thread someone asked if there were really any savings to be had from rapid prototyping. I shared my favorite story from the history of 3D (based on my knowledge). That post is repeated following for anyone interested.
"Perhps the savings generated by the eqipment have been over rated." A short bit of history for new comers. When 3D Systems was first starting (86 or 87, I am not sure exact year) Volvo gave them the data set for a new carburetor at the same time they sent the same data set to a carburetor manufacturer as the basis for a production run of 350,000 (100,000s but exact number might be a little different). 3D ran the data set overnight and sent the prototype to Volvo. The Volvo engineers looked at it and commented that it was a very nice model but that 3D had omitted one of the venturi ports.
Volvo was able to stop the production run before it started.
If you do not know why, e-mail me. I will tell you.
