PNG police recall officers from logging sites - Radio New Zealand

    Posted at 03:26 on 06 December, 2011

The Papua New Guinea police commissioner has issued a directive recalling all police personnel stationed at logging sites throughout the country to take effect immediately.

Logging companies such as Rimbunan Hijau, have at times arranged and paid for police personnel to be brought into areas, where they may be facing opposition from protestors.

Recently there were allegations of police assault and brutality on villagers in West Pomio in the province of East New Britain, by officers hired by the company.

The police spokesperson Dominic Kakas says the Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga, has responded to complaints.

“Due to the constant instances of alleged abuse of power and assault and so on by the members of the police who have been deployed to the logging sites nationwide it’s given raise to some concerns and Mr Kalunga has decided to issue a directive to remove all police personnel.”

Shameful. PNG Police long criticized for acting as private police for some of the crooked logging operations.

Maybe this and the so-called current "corruption crackdown" are aimed at preventing the whole government from being brought down?

Seems like all the police are massing in Port Moresby to maintain order on December 9 ( this Friday ).

Why the roadblocks if it's democratic country?
