MAKO Surgical Corp. Message Board

    Bought Some MAKO Today

Here's what I like about it:

-ISRG had similar financial results back in 2004 (revenue, EPS as well as a similar growth rate and install base (this was right before it blew up for the first time)

-ISRG's cofounders serve on MAKOs board of directors

-There are a lot of fat Americans and a rapidly aging global population that will need knee and/or hip replacements (was looking at Stryker for this reason a while back)

-Once you have the base product, you need the inputs (classic Gilette scenario)

-The cost of the base product should decrease and drive the adoption rate up

    -Relatively low float

-Decent institutional ownership but certainly room for more

-Volume was increasing so there is some interest

    -Pretty high short interest

    • Q1 up marginally. (the 18 sold in 4Q can be counted on for Q2 going forward due to known lagtime). Despite the miss on RIO sale, guidance yesterday remained unchanged at 11k to 13k procedures even after management said they would err on the side of caution in their estimates. That's a good sign.

    • Procedure guidance remained the same. 11,000-13,000 this year. A near double from last year on the high end. The growth is stellar. And my favorite part about MAKO (and what many newbies don't realize) is that MAKO gets $5,000+ for EACH procedure performed. Do the math:

      2007 4Q: 97 procedures
      2008 1Q: 102 procedures
      2008 2Q: 140 procedures
      2008 3Q: 159 procedures
      2008 4Q: 200 procedures
      2009 1Q: 265 procedures
      2009 2Q: 358 procedures
      2009 3Q: 418 procedures
      2009 4Q: 561 procedures
      2010 1Q: 731 procedures
      2010 2Q: 793 procedures
      2010 3Q: 815 procedures
      2010 4Q: 1,146 procedures

      2011 1Q: 1,304 procedures
      2011 2Q: 1,557 procedures
      2011 3Q: 1,813 procedures
      2011 4Q: 2,258 procedures

      (2011 TOTAL: 6,932 procedures)
**Guidance issued on 5/7/2012 for 11,000-13,000 procedures for FY 2012

    • Lots of sellers, lots of buyers. Someone will be disappointed.
