Part of the reason for the property tax explosion in Texas is that the rich get Ag Exemptions on their estates and pay almost no property tax. Leaving the middle class to shoulder the entire burden.
Michael Dell has a $75,000,000 estate outside of Austin and because he runs a herd of deer on the land he claims an Ag Exemption, which is supposed to be for farmers who depend on small scale agriculture for their entire living. Because of this his appraised value is not the $75,000,000 it should be its $289,000. He pays around $6,000 in taxes on a $75,000,000 estate. And Texans wonder why they are paying through their noses its reverse socialism you get to pay more so the billionaires can pay less.
