I write to you all from my Dell Dimension XPS D300. I bought my first Dell a few years ago, a 166. Wish I would have bought the stock then too. I have family that works at CPQ and had the option to get a presario with a 300mhz on discount, believe it or not I preferred to buy a Dell. CPQ desk tops are just too cheesy for me. I'v been tinkering with computers since the Apple IIe. I demand performance and Dell delivers. I own three times as much CPQ stock than Dell stock. I like both companies for different reasons. CPQ will continue to prosper selling average stuff, because lets face it, the largest chunk of the population is the average joe who wants to get a computer to access the internet. And Dell will continue to be the premier box maker selling to businesses and eventually more and more to the public.
I agree. Some people like to tinker, and review all the options available, and consider the myriad of combinations. Alternately, others have a general idea of the kind of computer they want, and they'll go to a store and buy one...today.
Two different groups of customers. Which group grows faster may or may not be an issue that decides the relative success of these two standouts.
