I believe you are both right. There are still 5m+ shares short, down from 8m+ in early january. I think that is most of the arbs clearing out. While I do not think we will see a "squeeze" in the traditional sense anymore, there is still alot to be covered. I believe the new amount of shares outstanding is roughly 85mil now- while a large increase, the VAST majority of that are shares that arent going to see the market for a long time as they are held by the Rales bros, Rales' wife, Markel, TPG, etc. I still think we make a bee-line to the low 40s.
This is a great stock to hold long term no doubt. You couldnt ask for smarter people that have been assembled to manage this company.
The earnings report and immediate subsequent trading was a scary couple of hours(LOL), but clearly the rebound confirmed everything that has been batted around this on this MB. I personally think they low-balled their expectations(roughly 1.50) and I think the big guys know that.
Dont expect a squeeze pop- but accumulate the stock and and let it ride. $30 is a great line in the sand, and if they do half as well with CFX as they have with DHR we could all be "rich as Rales"...opportunities like this are rare. Put the shares in your back pocket and be amazed in 3-5 years how much you have made.
Good company for a long term hold. Great management and investors. But not a short squeeze candidate.
The majority of shorts were arbs playing the Charter acqusition. They are almost all gone now - suspect that the next short interest report will show that soon. Those that remain shorted CFX and bought Charter shares when the deal was first announced so they have the CFX shares in hand (Charter shareholders received cash and CFX shares) to return without creating a short squeeze.
