While you are at it, why does the avg Silicon Valley job COST +20% more than the same job elsewhere in the US ? Workers HAVE to get paid more in California or they can't afford to live there. 10% income tax, 9% sales tax, $500/yr car registration, one of the highest state gas taxes, the list goes on and on...
Why does a company like HP move their operations from California to Texas? Why not close down the Texas operation instead? Easy, it costs more in California to do the same work.

Exactly. I've wondered when HPQ would begin to move even more work from Calif. to Texas, New England, and other Compaq locations. Its cheaper everywhere else - especially when you already own the real estate and there are lots of people looking for work nearby.
