looks like hp was part of the decision

"We strongly support Microsoft's decision to prioritize quality in determining the schedule for Windows Vista," said Todd Bradley, executive vice president of the Personal Systems Group at Hewlett Packard. "A January launch of Windows Vista allows us to execute in a consistent way throughout the holidays, and will provide the right opportunity for a large, exciting launch industrywide after the New Year."

Speaking of which, has anyone seen Bradley or maybe heard him speak? He has the highest paygrade of all the VPs. Just curious.

      • After thinking over this topic I have decided it really won't hurt PC makers much. I want Vista to be out for at least 6 months before I consider installing it. If I was buying a PC during the holidays I would find one with XP on it. Another reason it may not hurt is that people buying PCs at retailers aren't on average smart enough to know a new OS is coming out anyway. They will just buy what is on the shelf. It could hurt on-line sales. Will that hurt DELL more than HP? Who knows.

The other thing is if PC makers have made a deal with BillySoft to provide cheap or free upgrades based on purchases say after Nov 1 then it might not hurt much. I would rather buy an XP maching know I get the Vista upgrade free or on the cheap later. That way others can find the bugs and then I install it.

I think today's dip on stock price for the companies involved in PCs will turn out to just be another good buying opportunity.

    • Wow, that sure is disappointing. Think of all the new PC buyers who won't be affected by hardware DRM this Christmas because of this decision.
