    • Obama: Election 'has nothing to do' with Libya deaths
      Comments (61)

      10/26/12 7:02 PM EDT

President Obama again on Friday defended his administration's handling of the attack that killed four Americans in Libya, and said he's not holding back information ahead of Election Day.

"The election has nothing to do with four brave Americans getting killed and us wanting to find out exactly what happened," Obama said in an interview with KUSA, the NBC affiliate in Denver. Voters should not consider those events when making a choice on November 6.

President Obama Begs Off Answering Whether Americans in Benghazi Were Denied Requests for Help
Email 102 Smaller Font Text Larger Text | Print

In an interview with a Denver TV reporter Friday, President Obama twice refused to answer questions as to whether the Americans under siege in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, were denied requests for help, saying he’s waiting for the results of investigations before making any conclusions about what went wrong.

After being asked about possible denials of requests for aid, and whether it’s fair to tell Americans that what happened is under investigation and won’t be released until after the election, the president said, “the election has nothing to do with four brave Americans getting killed and us wanting to find out exactly what happened. These are folks who served under me who I had sent to some very dangerous places. Nobody wants to find out more what happened than I do.”

President Obama told KUSA-TV’s Kyle Clarke large that “we want to make sure we get it right, particularly because I have made a commitment to the families impacted as well as to the American people, we’re going to bring those folks to justice. So, we’re going to gather all the facts, find out exactly what happened, and make sure that it doesn’t happen again but we’re also going to make sure that we bring to justice those who carried out these attacks.”

      Clark pressed again.

“Were they denied requests for help during the attack?” he asked.

“Well, we are finding out exactly what happened,” the president again said. “I can tell you, as I’ve said over the last couple of months since this happened, the minute I found out what was happening, I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to. Number two, we’re going to investigate exactly what happened so that it doesn’t happen again. Number three, find out who did this so we can bring them to justice. And I guarantee you that everyone in the state department, our military, the CIA, you name it, had number one priority making sure that people were safe. These were our folks and we’re going to find out exactly what happened, but what we’re also going to do it make sure that we are identifying those who carried out these terrible attacks.”

Earlier today, Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin reported that CIA agents in the second U.S. compound in Benghazi were denied requests for help.

In response, CIA spokesperson Jennifer Youngblood said, “We can say with confidence that the Agency reacted quickly to aid our colleagues during that terrible evening in Benghazi. Moreover, no one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. In fact, it is important to remember how many lives were saved by courageous Americans who put their own safety at risk that night-and that some of those selfless Americans gave their lives in the effort to rescue their comrades.”

Absentee ballots may have been destroyed in crash
Associated Press – 3 hrs ago

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Federal officials say that absentee ballots being sent to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan may have been burned in a plane crash.

A top official in the Federal Voting Assistance Program this week notified election officials across the nation that a transport plane crashed at Shindad Air Base on Oct. 19.

The crash resulted in the destruction of 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to troops serving in the area.

Federal officials in their email to state election offices said they did not know if any ballots were destroyed. They also said the lost mail was limited to one zip code.

MSNBC Now Actively Telling Viewers How to Vote on Gay Marriage

      By Jeffrey Meyer | October 26, 2012 | 13:25

It should come as no surprise that MSNBC's socially liberal anchors are biased in favor of gay marriage -- saying it's an issue of "marriage equality." But on Friday’s MSNBC Live, anchor Thomas Roberts dropped all pretext of being a neutral journalist by explicitly telling viewers how they should vote on the controversial issue.

Speaking on Friday with Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director of the Family Equality Council, openly gay host Thomas Roberts actually told his audience how to vote on ballot questions in the states of Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and Washington. [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Roberts, who has a lengthy history of running one-sided soft interviews and stories showing his support for gay marriage, is now squarely acting as an activist, with just 11 days to spare before the election.

Responding to Roberts’ question about which of the four states has the best chance of passing gay marriage, Chrisler commented that:

And that means in Washington, Maryland and Maine, we'll see marriage equality for the community and in Minnesota they'll be able to beat back this really hurtful, hateful constitutional amendment that just basically tells kids and families who are LGBT in Minnesota that they are different and should be treated differently in the constitution.

Roberts concluded by telling his audience (emphasis mine), “in Minnesota you need to vote no and the other three states you need to vote yes.” This shameful example of activism further demonstrates that MSNBC is no longer an actual news network but instead a 24-hour outlet for promoting liberal causes, and in the case of Thomas Roberts, actually telling its viewers how they should vote.

    • Controversial book skewers Biden but is ignored by media

      By Dan Gainor

      Published October 26, 2012

Oct. 23, 2012: Vice President Joe Biden gesture while speaking at a campaign rally in Toledo, Ohio. (AP)

Imagine a scathing look at a vice presidential candidate. Put a “R” after that candidate’s name, like Sarah Palin, and you get big-name books, a controversial film and lots of news coverage.

Put a “D” after that candidate’s name, even when he’s still the sitting vice president, and it gets almost no attention. That’s the case with Jeff Connaughton, “a Biden Senate staffer turned lobbyist” who just published a book called “The Payoff” that Politico says “lacerates” the vice president.

As described by the publisher, "Beginning in January 2009, The Payoff" lays bare Washington’s culture of power and plutocracy. It’s the story of the twenty-month struggle by Senator Ted Kaufman [VP Biden's predecessor] and Jeff Connaughton, his chief of staff, to hold Wall Street executives accountable for securities fraud, to stop stock manipulation by high-frequency traders, and to break up too-big-to-fail megabanks."

Politico quoted from the book saying Biden was an “egomaniacal autocrat” “determined to manage his staff through fear.” Pretty strong stuff, landing just at the peak of a presidential campaign. Most not inside the Beltway might even call it “news.”

But it’s also been strongly ignored by the news media, forever chasing after Republican scandals. In this case, only a handful of outlets have covered it including Politico, The Washington Post and Al Gore’s ever-more-obscure Current TV have covered it. The Post gave it all of one paragraph.

Pretty amazing for a book Politico called “angry” and certainly has lots of anti-Biden goodies. “What’s remarkable about the book is the lengths that Connaughton goes to portray his former boss and political idol in a bad light, piling up embarrassing anecdotes and examples of when Biden couldn’t be bothered to help one of his own aides,” Jonathan Martin wrote.

So much for bad stories about the VP just before election, including one where “Biden revealed that he had been upbraided by an angry Obama.” Yet, these are exactly the kind of stories the news media would call game changers, which makes one wonder why this book is getting no ink.

But don’t hold your breath. The book came out in September and journalists have ignored it this long. It likely won’t get coverage until mid-November some time, if then. Just in time to have zero impact on the election.
