This Christmas, Spare a Thought for the Downtrodden H-P Shareholder
    By Jonathan Cheng WSJ
The broad stock market has nearly doubled since its March 2009 lows, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has tacked on 16% so far this year. But this holiday season, spare a thought for the poor Hewlett-Packard shareholder.
H-P, that old lion of Silicon Valley, has not been able to catch a break lately. The stock is down 50% this year, making it the worst of the 30 Dow industrials in 2012. Over the past three years, it’s plunged about 74%. Scandal after scandal after management change after management change have piled up over the past decade or so. And to make things worse, the tech world’s big trends — think smartphones, tablets, cloud computing and the like — don’t exactly play to H-P’s traditional strengths in PCs and printers.
No need to tell any of this to John Buckingham, chief investment officer at Al Frank Asset Management in Aliso Viejo, Calif. Mr. Buckingham, whose firm has held H-P’s shares in various amounts since 1988, spent Thanksgiving week dumping what remained of the beleaguered stock into the market.

    Sentiment: Strong Sell
