Palo Alto, CA, United States (4E) – With Apple announcing its move to bring back computer assembly duties to the United States, personal computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard (HP) reminded everyone of who was the first company to do so. According to HP, more than a third of business desktop PCs and workstation PCs are assembled in the United States. — 2.9 million units assembled in the country in 2012 alone.

“HP PCs have been assembled in the U.S. since the beginning. HP workstations and commercial desktop PCs are manufactured in Indianapolis, and HP servers are manufactured in Houston,” HP said on a company blog post.

HP added that having its production manufacture in the United States, the company generates employment for hundreds of people and produces billions of dollars.

Bulk of the assembly of HP laptops is found in China.

“We find that we are better able to serve our customers when we’re closer, versus building them in China and shipping them by sea. The labor arbitrage is not really a driving factor,” HP senior VP of operations said in an interview with CNET.

Apple intends to bring back the production of Mac to the United States. The Cupertino-based company announced production in the United States will pick-up next year.
