    A Paradox

Why is Congress so much more conservative than the American people? In particular, why is the House so much more conservative than the American people? Gerrymandering can explain the over-representation of Republicans in the House but it can't explain the over-representation of extreme right wingers in the Republican Party. And the same is true of the Democrats. The average Democratic voter is much more liberal than the average Democratic Congressman or Congresswoman. So what gives? My best guess is that the rich in both parties have seized control of the candidate selection process so that only moderate to conservative candidates run, even in the Democratic Party. But you have to wonder how long the unrepresented are going to sit still for being ignored.
