He actually did have the conviction to stand by his family and his son, who recently told him that he was gay and might want to marry in the future. The same thing happened to VP Cheney a while ago.
I can't speak for Urso, but the point may be that a lot of people (self included), have changed their minds about this issue. Stubbornly clinging to every conviction you've ever held is not necessarily courageous.
