Shorted today after seeing empty stores last week in Honolulu & Houston
I'm a big fan of the retailer, buy clothes from the chain and stop in every Zumiez store I come across. Last week I went to a Zumiez store in each of Waikiki, Honolulu, The Woodlands (Houston) and the Galleria (Houston). I was shocked to see the two Hawaii stores empty, but by the time I reached Houston was expecting to see those stores nearly vacant, which they were. I talked with the kids working at each of the stores and they all said the same thing: the stores haven't been that busy lately.
With the big run up the stock has had in the past quarter, it is now expensive and after seeing four slow stores last week, shorted the stock this morning with conviction.
You obviously are not the only one noticing this, judging from the stock price. I am also from the Houston area, and although ZUMZ stores are probably doing better than PACSUN, and some other teen retailers, I agree with you. There is no way that this stock is worth 35 bucks, although a lot of folks expected it to go there after recent earnings.
ZUMZ has always had huge growth expectations priced in. If it becomes obvious that growth is slowing, we could see this stock below 20 by 2012, my opinion only.
