Microsoft to launch WP8 reference design -- WITHOUT nvidia,

Microsoft to launch WP8 reference design in mid-2013, say sources

Daniel Shen, Shenzhen; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 25 January 2013]

    In excerpts.

Microsoft reportedly is cooperating with chipset suppliers including QUALCOMM on development of Windows Phone 8 reference design aiming to attract more smartphone makers in China to enter production of WP8 phones for the entry-level and midrange smartphone segments in China and other emerging markets, according to industry sources.

Microsoft is expected to release the WP8 reference design in mid-2013, with smartphone models built on the reference design to hit the market in the second half of the year, the sources indicated.

The development of the WP8 reference design will help Microsoft expand the ecosystem and market share of its new Windows Mobile platform, the sources commented.

QUALCOMM is expected to tie up with Microsoft for development of the reference design, since the chipset vendor has been offering chipset solutions for all WP8- and WP7.5-based models currently available in the market, the sources revealed.

MediaTek, an experienced chipset vendor for Window Mobile-based reference designs and a chipset vendor with strong business ties with China-based smartphone makers, is also likely to team with Microsoft for the speculated reference design project, said the sources."

    Jeepers Best,

Microsoft apparently picked QUALCOMM and MediaTek for their WP8 Team.

Unfortunately, nvidia did not get, well, referenced.

Sounds like an excellent plan by the Microsoft/QUALCOMM Team.

You know -- to capture the Enormous China cellphone market in 2013.

      A Very Very Good Plan.

      • Good post...However QCOM has declined with increased volume in 4 out of the last 10 trading days and is now below its 50 day MA. Now compare that to NVDA which has increased volume on the up days and is over its 50 day MA. (Oh, by the wasy NVDA is up over 1% in premarket).

So I guess we will be reading posts from "Broke.Best" and "Crying in my beer.Best" and "I should have Listen to the Long NVDA.Best."in the coming days...

        Sentiment: Buy

    • So Master?

      Well, a couple questions actually.

      1. How come nvidia never wins the Good Stuff -- like this WP8 reference design?

      2. And will Jen need to chop his revenue guidance again -- having lost China?

      I thought so.

      • You do a good job of re-affirming your ignorance with every post you composed.

Qualcomm always had the WP business from the very start, and QC went from 100% to much less, having to giving up some to others like BRCM and MediaTek.

You can almost draw an analogy that, one of these days, QC will be just like Apple today, having no where to go but DOWN.

And you need a better script to type from - or a new brain if medical advances are made fast enough.

      But, but, but...

      but, but, but.

I thought the pumper boyz here were sayin' that the Tegra #4 was gonna be,

      and I quote, "a slam-dunk shoe-in for the Microsoft Windows Phone 8".

Looks like the pumper boyz were Wrong.

      Again.
