Why Nvidia is Pushing Tablets over Phones....

Average Selling Price has to be higher. Compare Q3 CPD revenue and operating income to Q2 sales and operating income and you will see why. Up until late Q2 2012 phones and Tablet processor sales were equal but in Q3 Tablet Sales exploded.

    Q2 Revenue $180M
    Oper. Loss -$90M

    Q3 Revenue $244M
    Oper. Loss -$42M

In other words a revenue increase of $64M generated $48M to the bottom line. That is a gross margin of 75% for Tegra sold in tablets.

It's obvious why they are pushing tablets over phones. Sure if someone wants to pay full price in phones they will take it. After all the phone mfg. have to keep QCOM honest on the price, so a nibble here are there will happen. Those expecting big phone announcements will be dissappointed I'am afraid. But we did get a design win on a KungFu phone in China this week.

By the Way the Russian OEM that was mentioned in that piece on Nvidia reference designs...Wexler holds 35% of the Russian/East European tablet market with their current bestseller a Tegra 3 tablet.

Now this Project Shield thing is intriguing. If everyone is sold at profit, what is the worry? Mucho MCP guys around with the skills and experience to design hardware. Back in the day when Nvidia built chipsets, Intel would withhold tech info and samples until they had their chipsets ready for production and these same guys had a better Nvidia chipset ready when Intel launched the new processor. I bet they were clamoring to be on on the team. Besides THE BUZZ from the announcement is PRICELESS!

Sometimes holding on to redundancies is worth it.

    JMHO

    • NVIDIA has no choice - not yet having the integrated LTE technology advanced enough to compete with Qualcomm.

This will gradually change, let's hope, beginning H2 of 2013 when the wireless gap is narrow.

CEO Huang repeatedly stressed this point at the earnings cc . He said: nVidia needs 3 things to gain leadership in the mobile area:

      --Application processor (check)
--Wireless processor/modern (4G LTE, working on it, this is where the OpEx goes)
--Software stack (check, or at least NVIDIA is not handicapped)

The fact that NVIDIA "appears" to go for tablets as a top priority is a false illusion. Smartphones, whether high end or midrange/low end, entails huge volumes; its total addressable market is at least 5 times greater than the projected volume for tablets in the next few years. Jen Hsun would love to have a bigger piece of this pie, but it will happen only when Grey (Tegra 4 + I500) is certified by major carriers and shipped.

No amount of theorizing can conceal the fact that NVIDIA is trying to accomplish the same tasks on connectivity in 2-3 years while Qualcomm had 27 years to do it. I am very proud of what NVIDIA has done so far, but there is no denying that they are still behind.

Qualcomm's recent bashing of NVIDIA was only valid on the connectivity part, not the app processor.

That is Jen lying to you again.

        1. Grey for midrange/low end, Grey won't heck it. Check out why Samsung, with their own proc. and cheap radio, is bring out multiple models with brcm totally integrated solutions.

        2. still trying to go LTE LTE LTE - anybody who cares to do some google will find out even by 2015, 2G/3G is the overwhelming bulk of the market. And nvda ain,t got those 'cheap' radios. Hence nvda's accessible market is extremely small especially once you throw in aapl, samsung will never use nvda for high end.

The only thing Jen is proud of is his lying and pulling the wools over the pumpers here.

    • Hey XC I remember when you use to pump AMD at $8. What happened you switched to QCOM.

      LOL

      • Jeez XC you seem upset. I took profits and waited and bought back in at the lows. That is what you are suppose to do I thought. It ain't about ego. Plus I posted my trade.

You pumped AMD at $8 and now it's 2 something. Are you still in AMD?

Now your riding QCOM good for you. I wish you luck.

Long and strong in Nvidia at $11.50. Looking for $15 to $16 and collecting a nice dividend while I wait.

        Sincerely

        Sentiment: Buy

      • And we all remember your Nvidia make GPUs as round and large as cookies post.

Didn't you claim you were drunk when you posted that gem?

And who can forget your "Took My Profits" post, putting the dump on your pump.

Patting yourself on the back for dumping Nvidia to your long buddies. lmao

The problem with you Nvidia fans is you act like Nvidia is the ONLY stock on the planet

Buy low and sell high, did you hear of that or do you intend to whine on a message board
for a dividend increase and for Jen to take Nvidia off your hands in some private deal? lol

Keep making up nonsense and whining but no more dumb comment counting post
        or best seller list junk.

You stopped that comment counting and Amazon best seller list nonsense when
Nvidia warned and tanked during the Fermi Fiasco, didn't you? lol

        imho

    • Title should be" Why QCOM is pushing Nvidia out of the Surface tablet? lol

      imho
