Ebay's Milo hurt an important patent of Local Corp

We also fundamentally believe that our pattern portfolio is undervalued, so we think the value of our IP will be realized as we make progress and protecting our life under our patterns. We have a dozen patterns, three of which are in the emerging pay-per-call space, a multibillion ad revenue opportunity in mobile. We’re actively reviewing potential infringes of our pay-per-call intellectual property and expect to take action to preserve our IP raised in mobile later this year."

    • Very important patent: System for Providing Localized Shopping Information
which was issued on October 4, 2011, and the expiration date of which as determined based
on a patent term adjustment as calculated by the USPTO is May 5, 2030

Abstract: A localization service is provided that provides users with online information on local retailers that sell particular products. A user can perform a search using a web page associated with the localization service or by searching using an internet search engine. The user's search includes a search origin. The search origin may be defined in terms of location information such as a place name or a postal code. A search for a particular product at local retailers may be made using search parameters such as search origins, product names, model numbers, product categories, and product attributes. The localization service may provide the user with search results in the form of web pages that list which retailers sell the desired product in the vicinity of the search origin. A targeted advertisement server at the localization service may use display criteria to determine which targeted advertisements should be displayed for the user.

Local Corp's New Patent Could Offer Company Significant Opportunities
      Oct 14 2011

The USPTO granted a patent to Local Corp that appears to have significant implications for location based product and deal search offerings in the local space and has the potential to be the most valuable among a growing and increasingly valuable stable of local and directory search patents owned by Local Corp.

Patent 8,032,427 related to location based product search appears to encompass core aspects of services being offered by Groupon (Groupon Now), Living Social (Instant) and Foursquare; and is part and parcel of the product search functionalities

      • Milo hurt Local Corp's patent "System for Providing Localized Shopping Information"

Who is Milo and why did eBay Acquire them for 75 Million Dollars?

The local shopping startup Milo has recently been acquired by eBay – for 75 million dollars. Milo connects the worlds of online and offline stores by searching local store shelves in real-time to find the best prices and availability. The business concept of Milo is to show you what’s in-stock where, and tell you how much it costs at that very moment. Milo also allows insight into detailed product information and user reviews. In short, Milo makes it easy to access both online and offline shopping in one place.

For eBay, Milo represents just another way to get into the $917 billion market of online research to offline buying. And Forrester estimates that this will eventually reach $1.3 trillion and account for nearly 50% of total retail sales by 2013.

eBay plans to bring the inventories of its sellers to Milo. The company will also integrate Milo’s local product feeds into both its online marketplace and mobile applications. eBay’s barcode-scanning iPhone application RedLaser will also feature Milo local results.

        Local Shopping Ad Feeds
By feeding real-time shopping data into our localization engine and then filtering it for you (by category, types of services or store), we enable you to display private labeled shopping data to provide your audience with content that is relevant: product grids, price comparisons, discount pricing and stores where products are in stock.
