Nice discussion. If one wants a buyout candidate, why not look at IPI (pure play, US based, small enough to be easily acquired)? I just started seriously looking at fertilizer companies and am not interested in pure plays (IPI) or buyouts. Very interested in POT and MOS and would like to hear any thoughts regarding these--particularly their respective phosphate assets. Thanks!
There was no issue with BHP owning a large chunk of the shares and participating in the economic success of POT. The real issue was that of control.
BHP or anyone for that matter, can still call their broker and buy as many shares of the company as they want. The BHP offers were laughable and doomed to failure anyways in the environment at the time, regardless of Brad Wall's little temper tantrum.
