Anybody catch this from USA Today? LIFE is behind this effort to move from use of expensive flourescent dyes for gene sequencing to use of inexpensive and highly replicable CMOS technology to conduct gene sequencing. If LIFE lands the patents for this or even shares a portion of the intellectual property and licensing rights, we're looking at a ten-bagger here--not to mention a quantum leap in medical research and testing--and the very enhanced quality of LIFE that this company stands for...
I just bought a bunch after seeing this fabulous video about the ion torrent product: http://find.lifetechnologies.com/ionfirstsix/fl This is really exciting technology which will steal the business back from ILMN. Great idea to do Gordon Moore's dna while talking about Moore's law which will help them to pull ahead even further in future years.
In the six months since Ion Torrent launched, the company has increased its throughput tenfold, brought to market the fastest workflow in the next-generation sequencing industry, and become the fastest-selling sequencer.
Just six months after launching the 10 Mb Ion 314™ chip, throughput has increased tenfold to 100 Mb on the new Ion 316™ chip. That will increase another tenfold to 1 Gb in the fourth quarter when the Ion 318™ chip becomes available. The scalability of semiconductor technology has also enabled us to reduce the price: the Ion 314™ chip is now available for just $99 USD.
At the same time, Ion Torrent has also reduced the workflow by threefold to just eight or nine hours. These new products give Ion the fastest workflow in the industry:
