    Prison Reform

"The U.S. incarcerates its citizens at a rate roughly five times higher than the global average. We have about 5 percent of the world's population, but 25 percent of its prisoners, according to The Economist,. This status quo costs our local, state and federal governments a combined $68 billion a year -- all of which becomes a federal problem during recessions, when states look to Washington for fiscal relief. Over the standard 10-year budget window used in Congress, that's a $680 billion hit to the deficit.

Solving longstanding prison problems -- releasing elderly convicts unlikely to commit crimes, offering treatment or counseling as an alternative to prison for non-violent offenders, slightly shortening the sentences of well-behaved inmates, and substituting probation for more jail-time -- would do wonders for government spending."

    • Bevis, like most progressive reformers, you've been watching reruns of Shawshank Redemption way too often. Do the criime, do the time, DUH! High recidivism is a result of "sweetie-pie" reforms that do not work. If you know you can die in prison because of your actions fewer crimes will result. The promise of "paddy-cake" courts denies a working system.

We have a Constitution for a reason. We have laws as a result of that Constitution. Break the law and go to prison. Chicago had over 500 murders this year because they did not enforce the laws they have. Fear of prison deters few criminals in Chicago. BIG DUH! Lizard tip: Dumpster is a life saving maneuver in Cicago.

Poor Mr. Corzine has no worry about breaking the law even if he did steal $1.6B in misappropriated funds. Eric "Americans are cowards" Holder will keep him from those nastry courts. Afterall, he supports our wonderful administration.
