(AP) -- D arden Restau rants, stru ggling to draw more c ustomers into its Olive Garden and Red Lobster res taurants, predicted a third-quarter p rofit Friday that was b elow Wall Street's exp ectations and cut its outlook for the year.

    The Orla ndo, Fla.-based chain has tried to revamp menus and ma rketing for its flagship chains. But revenue at Olive Ga rden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakh ouse locations open at least one year is ex pected to fall 4.5 percent in the quarter ending Feb. .
    Dar den isn't the only comp any saying the higher payroll tax has cut into its business. On Th ursday Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said hig her taxes, along with rising gas prices and dela yed income tax re#$%$nds, were also crimping spe nding by its custo mers.

    • The payroll tax only reverted back to what it was previously. I doubt if that will make a difference in ther restaurant/supperclub business. Weather and employment numbers will be a bigger factor in people eating out.

    • Don't follow your logic on distribution costs.
      KO delivers drinks as syrups to the Darden warehouses and the restaurants serve it as fountain drinks.
      KO has been using hybrid trucks for about 5 years and saving quite a bit on fuel for local distribution of its cans and bottles.
