    When Coca Cola
    entered the China market in 1979, no one would
    that it could grow so fast and become so

    From nothing in 1979, Coca Cola (China) now has
    18 operating bottling
    plants. In addition, it
    has 5 more plants under construction; 4 of them will
    operational before the end of 1997. Coca Cola has
    a "go local" policy. Each
    plant hires about 500
    employees. Aside from the plant manager, supervisors,

    and controller, usually reloacted from Hong Kong, all
    other employess are
    recruited locally. It also try
    to maximize local purchasing. Coca Cola also

    work on its social responsibilities. It has been
    sponsoring the setting up of 50
    primary schools, "HOPE
    School", in the inland rural areas. Starting 1997, it

    is setting up financial aids for college students.
    In return for the financial aids,
    students are
    required to teach in the "HOPE School" during vocations

    During the late 70's, the whole
    Chinese soft drink market produced less than
    metric tons of concentrates. Last year, the market grew
    to 10 million
    tons. Coca Cola is the main
    participant. Beside the flagship product, "Coke",
    "Sprite" product line is the best selling non-cola drink
    in the China market.
    Because of its vast
    capacity, it also subcontract out its bottling capacity
    other local soft drink companies. This may
    explain why Coca Cola is such a
    great company. By
    capturing the China market, it has secured itself not
    the fastest growing market, but also the world's
    largest market.

    At the end of 1996, Coca
    Cola's China sales is only second to its Japanese
