Two recent surveys confirmed that Coca-Cola is China's most popular soft drink.
One of the surveys was conducted by the China Enterprise Management Association, the China Entrepreneurs Association and the Information Exchange Center of Chinese Enterprises.
The survey was designed to identify the most popular items used in Chinese households. Questionaires were sent to 60,000 homes in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.
Coca-Cola was the beverage of choice for the largest number of respondents.
Moreover, Coca-Cola came in first regarding market saturation and brand name reputation in the 1995 urban main daily consumer goods survey sponsored by the CCTV and the State Statistical Bureau.
In 1994, Coca-Cola China produced 136 million boxes of soft drink, accounting for 19 percent of the Chinese soft drink market. China currently has 16 Coca-Cola bottling factories, and the Coca-Cola Co. plans to open another 17 such plants in 1997. By then the company's investment in China will reach US$500 million.
The Coca-Cola Co. is the world's biggest beverage firm, and its products are among the world's most popular soft drinks. They are sold in approximately 200 countries and regions.
Coca-Cola Launches First Local Juice Brand in China
The first juice brand to be produced in China by an international soft drinks company was today launched in Beijing and Tianjin by Coca-Cola China Ltd.
Carrying the name of Tian Yu Di (Heaven and Earth), the new brand marks the successful transfer of the world's top beverage technology to create a distinct, non-carbonated, local juice line designed specifically for Chinese consumers.
A joint undertaking between Coca-Cola, the world's largest soft drinks producer, and the China National Council of Light Industry, Tian Yu Di is designed to further grow the local soft drinks industry in China.
Beverage base for Tian Yu Di, which is available in lychee, mango and guava flavors, is produced by Tianjin Jin-mei Beverage Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Coca-Cola China Ltd., the China National Council of Light Industry and its Tianjin affiliate.
``Tian Yu Di is a milestone in the development of the soft drinks industry in China,''said Steve Chan, executive vice president and general manager of Coca-Cola China Ltd. ``This unique brand is the result of joint cooperation to develop a line of top-quality juice drinks produced in China for Chinese tastes.
``Its introduction shows our ongoing support to develop and grow the local beverage industry. By combining the worldwide expertise of the Coca-Cola system with extensive local research into consumer tastes and preferences we have created a top quality local juice brand in the country.''
Initially, Tian Yu Di will be available in Beijing and Tianjin with distribution planned for Shanghai in the next few months. Additional juice flavors, such as shanza, hami-melon, sugarcane, coconut and star fruit are planned for later launch.
As the brand is introduced in other regions of China, it will be produced and distributed through the network of 16 Coca-Cola bottlers across the nation. Consideration will be given to launching Tian Yu Di in other markets in Asia at a later stage.
