No surprise - San Bernardino County OKs Mojave water project

    The Associated Press
    Published: Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 - 9:32 pm

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- San Bernardino County officials have approved a plan to pump the Mojave Desert's groundwater to supply it to Southern California homeowners.

The Los Angeles Times and San Bernardino Sun report that county supervisors voted 4 to 1 Monday to allow Cadiz Inc. to draw more than 1 million acre-feet from the desert aquifer over 50 years.

The private company still needs permission to move the groundwater through the Colorado River Aqueduct, and it has not secured financing for the project, estimated to cost some $275 million.

Environmentalists have filed lawsuits to block the project, saying it would harm the threatened desert tortoise, bighorn sheep and the Mojave National Preserve, where some of the world's oldest Joshua trees grow.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein has called for a federal review of the proposal.

    • In Bettina Boxall's Los Angeles Times article from September 30, 2012 she states "Cadiz has enjoyed a warmer reception from San Bernardino County supervisors, who have received nearly $80,000 in combined campaign contributions from the corporation since 2007".

So basically what you have to do today is to "contribute significant funds to the supervisors of some County" to have them approve (I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't even read any of the EIR, reports, etc.) anything you put in front of them.

There is a legal term for this that I don't want to use here, but it is related to "impairment of integrity, virtue, or moral principle"

    • This is odd - Yahoo cut off my main post.

Notice the third paragraph - still needs permission to use the CRA - more importantly - has NOT secured financing - estimated cost $ 275 million.

Have the project costs gone up ? - I thought the cost estimates were $ 225 million. What am I missing ?

Then, let us not forget the objection by Sen. Feinstein - senior senator from CA.

      Sentiment: Strong Sell
